Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care Certification

For Joint Replacement

Our Joint Replacement Program certification from The Joint Commission means that United Regional and our orthopedic surgeons have acheived the highest standards of excellence in joint replacements. Joint Commission surveyors evaluate the program's performance in all areas that affect patient care. In addition to assessing clinical processes and quality standards, the surveyors interview patients, staff and physicians as part of the certification process.  Patients in need of joint replacements can come to United Regional with confidence that they will receive care that meets rigorous standards for quality.

For Wound Management

The Joint Commission Certification Program for Wound Management provides a comprehensive evaluation of a facility services, including use of evidence-based processes, quality-improvement efforts, and outcomes. It represents the industry gold standard in health care.

United Regional's Wound Care Center was the first Texas facility, and only the third independent hospital-based program in the country, to achieve the heralded Wound Management Certification from The Joint Commission. This certification means that the Wound Care Program meets or exceeds the highest standards of care for treatment and outcome. The program was re-certified in October 2011.

Awards for Stroke and Heart Disease Care

The American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association's (ASA) "Get With The Guidelines" program helps ensure the care that hospitals provide to their patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke meets the latest evidence-based guidelines. United Regional has been featured with 518 hospitals in an US News & World Report, America'ss Best Hospitals issue in recognition of our commitment and success in performance achievement using the Get With The Guidelines program for stroke and cardiac care.

United Regional has earned the AHA/ASA's Gold Performance Achievement Award for stroke care by maintaining core standard levels of care for 36 consecutive months. United Regional also earned Gold Achievement Award for coronary artery disease care and treating heart failure, respectively.

This means that patients with stroke, coronary heart disease and heart failure may come to United Regional with the confidence that the care they will receive exceeds the national guidelines for program quality.

Primary Stroke Center Certification

Stroke is the nation's third leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. Each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. There are approximately 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

United Regional is proud to have achieved the distinction as a Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification. The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Achievement of certification signifies that the services we provide have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes. It is the best signal to our community that the quality care we provide is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. United Regional treats approximately 400 stroke patients annually and serves as the hub of the area's Stroke Network.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Certification

Chronic lung disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and is projected to be the third leading cause of death for both males and females by the year 2020. COPD can dramatically impact an individual's quality of life and is the only major disease with an increasing death rate, rising by 16%.

In 2009, United Regional's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is proud to have received national certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). United Regional's program is one of only six pulmonary rehabilitation programs in Texas to achieve this recognition.

This voluntary certification process recognizes programs that have been reviewed by the AACVPR national board and found to have met the rigorous requirements for standards of care. The program includes both education and exercise to help patients with chronic lung disease improve the quality of their everyday lives.

American College of Radiology Accreditations

Not all radiologic equipment and the technicians who perform the procedures meet the high standards that United Regional's radiology department has achieved. Our digital mammography unit, stereotactic biopsy unit, MRI, CT scanners, ultrasound and nuclear medicine are all are accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). And we have the only CT scan in the region certified by the ACR for pediatric scanning.

The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standard after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy if facility equipment. The surveyors report their finding to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation. Our digital mammography unit and our MRI are also ACR accredited through the state of Texas. Following our Department of State Healthy Services inspection in October 2009, we were awarded a certificate given to only those facilities with a perfect inspection.

Bariatric Center of Excellence

Obesity is one of America's most serious epidemics. Over 23 million Americans are morbidly obese, which means that they have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40, exceeding their ideal body weight by at least 100 pounds. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, bariatric surgery is the most effective and long lasting treatment for morbid obesity and many related conditions. A variety of surgical procedures offer not only durable and safe control of weight but also provide previously unimaginable full remission of many of the co-morbidities, including diabetes, asthma, cardiopulmonary failure, infertility and stress incontinence.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) identified the need to recognize the centers that perform well and to help surgeons and hospitals reach optimal levels of performance. To achieve this, the ASMBS created the Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence® program.

United Regional maintained its Center of Excellence status in 2011. Centers of Excellence participate in a rigorous evaluation process that documents the comprehensiveness of the program and meets established program requirements for providing safe bariatric surgical care with excellent short- and long-term outcomes. The evaluation not only documents process, i.e., equipment, supplies, training of surgeons and staff and the availability of consultant services, but emphasizes results.

Additionally, United Regional's Bariatric Center of Excellence provides a designated bariatric unit. Several of the unit's nurses have undergone bariatric surgery and been patients on the unit. To bariatric surgery patients, the nurses represent the success of the program and they provide the support and education that comes from personal experience.

Commission On Cancer

United Regional's Cancer Program is one of just over 1400 Commission on Cancer (CoC) approved cancer programs nationwide. Cancer programs earning recognition from the CoC offer high-quality cancer care that meets or exceeds Commission standards.

Only one in four hospitals that treat cancer patients receives this special approval, and 80% of newly diagnosed cancer patients are treated in a CoC program.

CoC accreditation recognizes the quality of cancer care available at a facility and offers a commitment that you will have access to all of the various medical specialists who are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Receiving care at a CoC-Approved Cancer Program ensures that you will receive:

  • Quality care close to home
  • Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients
  • Access to cancer-related information, education, and support
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results, and offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
