United Regional Bariatric Program offers Solutions to New Year’s Weight Loss Resolutions
Monday Jan. 12, 2009
Wichita Falls, Texas, January 12, 2009 – The holiday weight gain for most Americans is just one to five pounds. Unfortunately, these pounds are seldom shed after the new year begins, and they account for the steady weight gain people experience over a few years. For those serious about a ‘New Year’s weight loss resolution,’ United Regional Solutions program offers area residents both non-surgical and surgical options.
United Regional Solutions has developed a medically supervised weight loss program, personalized to each participant. “Treatment is based on a comprehensive approach to long-term weight loss and wellness,” says Aketa Thomas, medical weight loss program coordinator, who is also an exercise physiologist. “Participants receive diet options, nutrition counseling, fitness plans, and ongoing lab tests and EKGs, to monitor their health,” Ms. Thomas adds.
There are individualized plans for persons who need to lose more than 50 pounds, but not considering bariatric surgery; less than 50 pounds and have weight-related health conditions; and 10 to 20 pounds. Plans are also available to help individuals maintain their weight loss on a long-term basis, and for those persons preparing for lap-band™ or gastric bypass surgery.
“Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is not always attainable through a reduced calorie diet and exercise,” comments Dr. Brett May, bariatric surgeon for United Regional Solutions program. He adds, “I’ve seen countless patients who have tried numerous diet plans and work-out regimens only to lose minimal weight and then gain it back. Sometimes other interventions are necessary to help persons achieve and maintain a healthy weight.”
“My patient’s overriding goal is to get healthier. They want to reduce their dependence on blood pressure medication and to eliminate diabetes. Both have been found to be health benefits of weight loss surgery,” states Dr. Christopher Finnell, bariatric surgeon with United Regional Solutions. “Another important goal of losing weight is to be able to return to activities a person once enjoyed, but can no longer participate in due to decreased energy levels experienced by being overweight,” adds Dr. Finnell.
United Regional is designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by meeting high standards of care, including a specialized bariatric unit for surgical patients with staff dedicated to the care of the bariatric patient. Other program components include monthly support group meetings, a nurse liaison to assist with the challenges of daily lifestyle change, and extensive education for pre-surgical patients.
