Lap Band

LAP-BAND ®  surgery is done through several small cuts, called incisions, in the abdomen. The doctor places small surgical tools and a camera through the incisions. The doctor then wraps a device around the upper part of your stomach to form a ring, which is an adjustable gastric band. Attached to the ring is a thin tube leading to an access port that is left under the skin. The access port is the place where the doctor puts in a needle to add or take away saline. Adding saline tightens the band and makes the stomach smaller. The doctor can also remove saline, if the ring is too tight.

The LAP-BAND ® surgery makes the stomach smaller limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold. This helps persons eat less and feel full sooner, resulting in weight loss.

Weight Loss or Bariatric Surgery

The LAP-BAND ® is an adjustable silicone band designed to limit food intake that is surgically placed around the stomach opening. The smaller stomach pouch created by the LAP-BAND ® gives you a sense of fullness with less calories. When you consume fewer calories than you need, you will begin to use the energy stored in your body. This energy is stored in fat, and as you use up your fat deposits, you lose weight.

The FDA approved the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System in June 2001. It is the only adjustable surgical treatment for morbid obesity in the United States. It is the least invasive way to surgically alter the amount of food your stomach can hold. Unlike other methods of bariatric surgery, there is no cutting or stapling required and the intestines are not rerouted during the procedure.

This results in a safe and effective surgical option for you that has less discomfort and usually requires a shorter recovery time. The procedure is also reversible, if required. When the gastric band is removed, the stomach will eventually return to original capacity.

LAP-BAND ® Surgery Adjustments

Because the LAP-BAND is adjustable, the rate of weight loss can be controlled and modified to meet your individual needs and lifestyle. Periodic adjustments of the LAP-BAND are sometimes performed and is simple office procedure. The procedure involves adjusting the amount of saline in the band to adjust its size.

Adding saline makes the band smaller and diminishes the size of the stomach opening, resulting in an increased rate of weight loss. Removing saline enlarges the opening and helps to reduce any discomfort you may experience when eating.

LAP-BAND ® End Result

When you have a smaller stomach opening, it takes less food to feel full or satisfied, even though it is much less than you are probably eating now. However, successful weight loss with a LAP-BAND ® depends on your willingness to make lifestyle changes, especially in those areas that relate to food. If you are unwilling or unable to make these changes, you should consider alternative weight loss programs
