I. Orthopedic Services

Orthopedic Surgery involves the correction of injuries and disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints and ligaments. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that one in seven Americans will experience a musculoskeletal impairment. Orthopedic injuries can affect individuals of any age, gender or physical condition.

At United Regional, our highly trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeons provide extensive diagnosis and specialized treatment plans for those who have experienced an orthopedic injury. As a complement to the orthopedic surgery, United Regional has licensed physical therapists to help reduce pain and increase function for everyday life.

  • Gout

These conditions are treated through surgical procedures and physical therapy programs.

V. Hip & Knee

At United Regional we treat a variety of hip and knee conditions.

Hip pain is most often caused by:

  • Fracture
  • Arthritis
  • Insufficient blood flow

Arthritis and insufficient blood flow can often be treated through surgery and physical therapy. Hip fractures often lead to total hip replacement because less than 50% of those who suffer a hip fracture are able to return to their normal level of activity.

Most knee injuries can be categorized by into three types:

  • ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury
  • MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) injury
  • Meniscus (Cartilage) tears

These soft tissue injuries are often corrected by minimally-invasive surgical procedures and physical therapy programs. However, with a severe knee injury or chronic pain, a total knee replacement may be required.

Total Joint Replacement

You don’t have to live with severe joint pain and the limitations it creates in your life. In fact, there are many treatment options available at United Regional for this condition. And for those who don’t experience adequate relief with medication and other non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy or injections, joint replacement surgery can reduce your pain and increase joint function, helping you to return to the activities you once enjoyed.

Leading Technology at United Regional

Tremendous advances have been made in joint replacement surgery. And now there’s even better news. In the operating room, computer-assisted navigation technology provides orthopedic surgeons with detailed information about your new joint mechanics to make the procedure more accurate.

How it works. As the surgeon moves an instrument within your joint, special infrared trackers calculate its position and wireless instruments instantaneously transfer the data to a computer in the operating room.

This information is then displayed on a monitor as an interactive model of the anatomy or “blueprint” that also shows the surgeon all angles, lines and measurements of your unique anatomy. The surgeon uses the monitor while replacing the diseased bone with new, artificial joint components, often called prostheses or implants. The virtual model helps a surgeon identify and make necessary adjustments to the implants to help ensure your new joint has the stability and range of motion needed for a successful replacement.

There are a number of benefits to having a computer-assisted, orthopedic surgical procedure:

  • Increases surgical precision of joint replacement implant placement, which may increase the life of your replacement
  • Helps reduce the risk of dislocation and revision surgery
  • May help provide greater stability and range of motion
  • Helps improve the overall function of your joint replacement

Computer-assisted surgery may allow for less invasive surgical techniques, which have several other potential advantages, including:

  • Reduced blood loss during surgery, which reduces the need for a blood transfusion
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced length of your hospital stay
  • Shorter post-operative physical rehabilitation
  • Less scarring

VI. Elbow and Shoulder

At United Regional we treat a variety of elbow and shoulder conditions.

Elbow pain is most often a result of:

  • Inflammation of the tendons (“tendonitis”)
  • Fractures
  • Hyperextension (“tennis elbow”)
  • Arthritis.

These conditions are most often treated through surgical procedures and physical therapy programs.

Shoulder pain comes from swelling, inflammation, tearing or bone spurs around the four tendons that make up the rotator cuff. Common causes of this type of pain are:

  • Tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

Surgical procedures and physical therapy may be recommended to treat the source of pain. However, for more severe cases, a shoulder replacement may be required.

Reverse Shoulder Replacement

Orthopedic surgeons at United Regional now offer a new surgical solution for patients who have significant pain and little or no movement in their shoulder.

In a healthy shoulder, the upper arm bone (humerus) ends in a ball shape. This fits into a socket formed by the shoulder blade (scapula). Together the ball and socket form the shoulder. There are many medical conditions that prevent the shoulder joint from functioning normally.

With the reverse shoulder replacement, the positions of the ball and socket are switched. The implant is designed so that the ball portion is attached to the scapula and the socket is placed at the upper end of the humerus.

Reverse shoulder replacement surgery may help patients with rotator cuff arthropathy, a medical condition in which the rotator cuff muscles (the muscles around the shoulder joint) have torn to a point where they can no longer move the shoulder joint and allow it to function normally. Patients with shoulder weakness due to arthritis, a previous shoulder injury such as a shoulder fracture, rotator cuff tear and/or failed previous shoulder surgeries may also benefit from the reverse shoulder prosthesis.

VII. Physical Therapy

Outpatient Physical Therapy Services

Injuries and acute, chronic and post-surgical conditions can cause pain, weakness and loss of function. United Regional’s outpatient physical therapy services provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment to help patients regain strength and return to independence. These services may be provided as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with recovery from an orthopedic procedure.

Evaluations

Before developing a physical therapy plan, clinicians complete a thorough assessment. This step identifies specific limitations and provides information for planning and defining treatment goals.

Evaluations include, but are not limited to assessments of:

  • Activities of daily living
  • Isolated or functional strength testing
  • Range of motion
  • Balance impairments
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Neurologic and sensory impairment
  • Posture
  • Gait function on even and uneven surfaces
  • Cause of pain
  • Need for assistive devices, including orthotics and prosthetics

Treatment Planning and Implementation

Treatment plans are developed with input from the patient and family members. Treatment goals may include:

  • Preventing or reducing the severity of physical deficits and pain
  • Restoring lost function and endurance

Time frames for accomplishing these goals are dependent on the patient’s diagnosis and condition prior to the injury, surgery or symptoms.

Specialized Rehabilitation Programs are provided for:

  • Sports-specific high performance training
  • Balance and proprioceptive coordination training
  • Postural corrective exercises
  • Flexibility programs
  • Vestibular and inner ear exercises for dizziness
  • Work simulation programs
  • Spinal stabilization exercises
  • Activity modification education

Pain Management Programs

Our physical therapists are trained in a wide variety of hands-on techniques to deliver optimal relief of pain. Soft tissue techniques developed by the Academy of Orthopaedic Medicine such as cross friction massage and joint mobilization/manipulation are the keystones of our practice. Other hands on techniques include:

  • Neuromuscular therapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Muscle energy techniques
  • 3-Dimensional spinal decompression
  • Ultrasound
  • Heat
  • Ice
  • Electrical nerve stimulation

Postural corrective exercises, proper body mechanics and proper breathing techniques are also used to improve flexibility and reduce stress.
