The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at United Regional is certificatified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). United Regional’s program is one of only six pulmonary rehabilitation programs in Texas to achieve this recognition.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is an 18-week program is dedicated to helping patients with chronic lung disease improve the quality of their life.
This is accomplished through education regarding:
- breathing training
- smoking cessation
- stress management
- environmental irritants
- respiratory disease process
- pulmonary medications
- work simplification
- oxygen use
The program also includes an exercise component that helps patients increase endurance for participating in everyday living activities.
Chronic lung disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and is projected to be the third leading cause of death for both males and females by the year 2020. COPD can dramatically impact an individual’s quality of life and is the only major disease with an increasing death rate, rising by 16%.” It is estimated that there are currently 16 million people in the United States with COPD and possibly another 14 million, still undiagnosed, and in the beginning stages with little to minimal symptoms.
