The Sleep Diagnostic Center was established in 1987 to aid neurologists in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with difficulties falling asleep at night, problems with excessive sleepiness during the day or other medical problems that may occur or increase in severity during sleep.
Accredited neurologists and pulmonologists on the medical staff of United Regional, as well as sleep technologists and Respiratory Therapists, provide quality treatment to you. Since the unit is part of United Regional, specialists in many other fields are also available for consultation and treatment.
More than 130 million Americans suffer with sleep problems. While the statistic is startling, there is good news — most sleep disorders can be treated and United Regional has a specialized facility that can accurately diagnose and treat sleep–related problems. Sleep is not merely a ‘time out’ from daily life. It is essential for mental and physical restoration. There are more than 80 known disorders that can interfere with that vital sleep.
Our Sleep Lab features four private rooms for diagnostic sleep studies. The center’s state–of–the–art laboratory is equipped to monitor brain waves, breathing, heart activity, muscle activity and other functions in order to uncover the source of sleep problems. The results of these tests are reviewed by registered staff and physicians, who then develop a plan for treatment which include lifestyle changes, breathing aid devices and medications. Referrals to the center are accepted from physicians and mental health professionals.
NARCOLEPSY is a condition in which people fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as while eating, talking or driving.
SLEEP APNEA is a condition in which a person is unable to breathe properly during sleep. Breathing may stop for periods of fifteen seconds or more several hundred times a night. Loud snoring or labored breathing during sleep are symptoms of the disorder.
INSOMNIA is a difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during the night. Some people consistently wake up during the night.
