Knowledge Based Medication Administration

United Regional Health Care System has bar-code based technology to further its commitment to improving patient safety. The bar-coded medication administration solution enables nurses to quickly and intuitively verify the five rights of medication administration – right medication, right dose, right time, right route and right patient – all to produce dramatic improvements in accuracy as part of an organizational initiative to improve care delivery.

At the bedside, nurses use a held-held wireless device to scan the medication packet, their own employee ID badge and the patient’s armband to verify the “five rights.” An alert is triggered if any of these five rights isn’t met, prompting the nurses to check the patient’s chart and the doctor’s order. If everything matches, the dose is given and the patient’s electronic chart is automatically updated. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other caregivers can easily access and monitor the effectiveness of each drug treatment and make changes if needed.
