United Regional Sets National Benchmarks

Is Named One of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals and Everest Award Winner by Truven Analytics for a Second Consecutive Year

United Regional was named in the March 3 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics. This is the second consecutive year United Regional has achieved this prestigious award.

In addition to being named one of the country’s top hospitals, United Regional was again honored as an Everest Award winner. This means that in addition to achieving 100 Top Hospitals status, United Regional has continued to set national benchmarks for the fastest, most consistent long-term improvement as measured over the past five (5) years (2008-2012). United Regional is one of only 14 hospitals nationally who achieved this Everest Award honor in 2014.

Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® annual study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities, based on a national balanced scorecard. The 100 Top Hospitals balanced scorecard measures hospital performance across 10 areas: mortality; inpatient complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

“This year’s 100 Top Hospitals represent the highest national standards in hospital care and management today. They set the benchmarks for peers around the country to follow — consistently delivering outstanding quality of care, satisfaction, and community value at a reasonable cost,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics. “The majority of the 2014 award winners have produced year-to-year performance improvement, as well. This speaks to the consistent focus on excellence by the entire organization and the men and women who serve patients.”

President and CEO of United Regional, Phyllis Cowling states,

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 2,803 short-term, acute-care, nonfederal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

To be selected for these awards in two consecutive years proves that we are more than a ‘one-hit wonder,’ validating a constant level of high performance and commitment to our expectations of excellence. Moreover, it reflects our inclusion as one of the nation’s best hospitals which, collectively, have a lower mortality index, have fewer patient complications, avoid adverse patient safety events, follow accepted care protocols, have lower 30-day readmission/mortality rates, keep expenses low, send patients home sooner, and score better on patient satisfaction surveys. These outcomes are consistent with our organizational passion of providing excellence in health care for the communities we serve. I am incredibly proud of our employees, physicians, volunteers, and board members for their collective commitment to that passion.
